Tories play race card as campaign crumbles
Normally the Tories play the race card rather closer to the election. Using it in the 'near-term' campaign - as January activities are often called - shows how desperate they have become.
Not surprising, as Michael Howard's Australian campaign chief has told him the election is lost already.
The Times says:
Mr Crosby has concluded from the partyĆ¢€™s private polling, showing Labour with a comfortable six-point lead, that the Tories cannot win the next election, expected on May 5. He believes that Mr Howard should concentrate on a face-saving attempt to increase his strength in Parliament by 25 to 30 seats.
There are entertaining tales of internal Tory squabbles over campaign strategy.
Of course, what is really going on here is another piece of Tory desperation. The best chance they have is to lull Labour voters into complacency - and a low turnout, or a switch to another party - allowing Labour marginals to be captured by the Tories. That's why we have to keep campaigning.

You are actually playing the race card by falsely accusing the Tories of playing the race card. You are making race the issue when the Tories are talking about immigration regardless of race, and in doing so you are the one mentioning race. The Tories are highlighting a very important issue and the people of Britain are aware of that.
It takes courage to stand up for sensibility, it only takes a corward to criticise it.
From now on I'll be keeping a review of your material on my weblog.
I stand by what I said. David Aaronovitch got it right in today's Guardian. Have a look at http://www.guardian.co.uk/Refugees_in_Britain/Story/0,2763,1397950,00.html
