From the Rhondda to the Ebro
While I was at the Eisteddfod, I bought a book called From the Rhondda to the Ebro by Alun Menai Williams, one of the oldest surviving members - and the last surviving Welsh member - of the International Brigade that fought to defend Spain's democracy in the Spanish Civil War. Alun himself has said:
If you were a Rhondda boy, you were politically minded and most of all you were a natural anti-fascist - so that was me and that's why I went to Spain.
I am looking forward to reading Alun 's book. Here is the publisher's blurb:
"From the Rhondda to the Ebro" is the autobiography of the last surviving Welsh International Brigader, Alun Menai Williams. This book is more to do with Alun's life in the Welsh Valleys, London, Army life in the RAMC and his experiences in reaching Spain. Alun not only served in the trenches of Jarama but also at Belchite, Brunete, Jarama and was present when the International Brigades left Barcelona at the end of 1938. Serving as a paramedic in the Thaelmann, Abraham Lincoln, Washington and British battalions of the International Brigades, Alun's experiences in Spain were far reaching.
According to his publisher, they are looking at special Spanish and Catalan editions of his book.
