In most parts of Wales, 18 September 1997 was sunny and bright, with temperatures reaching 24'C in some places. The Daily Mirror's Welsh edition (somewhat different from the Welsh Mirror, published a couple of years later) had a front-page headline 'Go for it, Wales'.
The Western Mail had a front-page of people in different roles in Welsh life urging a yes-vote.
I told the story in my book on the campaign,
Wales Says Yes, of how
the next day's headlines changed through the night, and how Nick Horton, then of the
Western Mail, now at the BBC, uttered the words 'Hold the Front page' for the only time in his life. Nick tells the story
in his own words on the BBC website today.

I've always said that if a story is good enough, it's worth telling twice. Or three times. Or four...
