    Older Person's Commissioner

I am delighted that Ruth Marks has been appointed as the new Commissioner for Older People by the Welsh Assembly Government. The Commissioner – believed to be the first of its kind in the world – will protect and strengthen the rights of older people in Wales.

I have known Ruth for many years and I know she will be a strong voice for older people in Wales. She has been a strong advocate for blind people and for women in the past. I have already invited her to meet with local pensioners groups in the Rhondda.

This was a pledge from our 2003 manifesto when we promised to create a role for a Commissioner for Older People in Wales.

The new Commissioner will look at ways of improving the services that the Assembly Government and NHS provide older people and will be a champion for older people across Wales.
